7 Prayers of Athletes Before a Game

Prayer for the Athletic Team’s Protection:

Isaiah 40:31 “But those who trust the Lord will find new strength. They will be strong like eagles soaring upward on wings; they will walk and run without getting tired.”

Today is game day. Lord, I praise you for the skills and talents you have given me. I praise you for the joy that comes from activities provided to me. May my passion for this sport never be more than the passion I have for you. Today, give me wisdom to compete successfully. The coaches have trained me—please help me put those skills into practice as I enter the game. I pray my coaches have wisdom and knowledge to call the right plays. Give them patience as they lead our team, knowing the other players have been well coached also.

Father, please protect our team as we travel to the game site. Protect any friends, families, and fans traveling too. Put your angels around the players on both teams during the game. Guard us against any injuries that could happen. Give us the courage to play to the best of our ability.

Matthew 5:26 “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” May we all have the spirit of sportsmanship, letting our light shine before all. Many times tempers will flare. Guard us against such even if we disagree with a referee’s call or if we are frustrated in the way the game is going. Remind me it is just a game, and we all want to win. Guard our tongue against voicing frustration. Let our tongue build each other up. I pray our fans exhibit the same sportsmanship.

Lord, I also pray for the referees. Thank you for their time. Remove all prejudices in their heart so that they are able to see all plays in a fair manner. Give them the wisdom needed to fairly follow the rules of the game to benefit both teams.

No matter the outcome, give the players, coaches, and fans grace to support the outcome. May our behavior be pleasing to you.

Praying with strength to our Savior, Amen

Prayer for Good Field Conditions for the Athletic Event:

Psalms 91:1-2 Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the LORD, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.”

Lord, as I prepare for our next game, I want to focus on the field we will be playing on. I know you are concerned about all aspects of our lives so I boldly come to you with this request. You know all and know the condition of the field is important to the players’ health. I pray no players are injured during a game, especially due to poor field conditions.

I come before you today to ask for your blessings on the field where the game will be played. I pray that the conditions would be safe and conducive for the players to give their best performance. I ask that the rain would hold off, the winds would be calm and the ground would be dry. I pray for the safety of all the players, coaches and officials. Help us to remember that this game is not just about winning but about sportsmanship, teamwork and having fun. I ask for your continued guidance and protection throughout the game. I pray this in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Philippians 4:6-7 “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

Prayer for Fair Referees and Umpires for the Games:

Psalms 89:14 “Righteousness and justice are the foundation of Your throne;
Lovingkindness and truth go before You.”

Dear Lord,

Today is game day. We ask for your guidance and wisdom as we participate in this sporting event. May the referees and umpires be fair and impartial in their decisions, and may they be guided by your truth and justice.

Help us to play with sportsmanship and respect, and to remember that this game is a celebration of our abilities and teamwork. May the outcome be a testament to our effort, skill, and dedication, rather than to any biases or unfairness.

We pray for the safety of all players, and for a fun and enjoyable competition for all involved. May this event bring us together in friendship, unity, and mutual respect. To God be the glory!

Amen.

Psalm 106:3 “Blessed are they who observe justice, who do righteousness at all times!”

Prayer to Keep Me Focused During the Game:

Proverbs 4:25 “Let your eyes look directly forward, and your gaze be straight before you.”

Heavenly Father, I come to you today asking for your grace and guidance as I participate in today’s game. Help me to keep my focus on the game and not everything that easily distracts me. As I prepare for the game, help me focus on a play-by-play scenario of my position.

Give me the strength and determination to push through any challenges that may arise, and to stay dedicated to giving my best effort. May my actions reflect my passion and love for the sport, and may I always play with honor and integrity.

Thank you for the gifts and abilities you have given me, and for the opportunity to compete in this game. I ask that you would be with me in all things, and guide me toward a successful and fulfilling experience. Help me focus on playing to the best of my ability and being a team player. I accept with grace the outcome of the game, for you know all even before we ask.

In your precious name I pray, Amen.

2 Timothy 2:15 “Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth.”

Prayer for My Coaches as They Lead the Team:

First Corinthians 9:24 “Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one receives the prize? So run that you may obtain it.”

Lord, I thank you for the coaches of my team. They have given their time and self to the development of each of the players. Today I ask you bless them and guide them as we go into our next game.

Father, show them the particular plays to call and to know which players to put on the field. I pray no players question the decisions the coaches make. I lift the coaches up to you to be fair, keeping the end game their focus.

Please keep the coaches healthy as they devote many hours to the team and players. I realize there is a level of stress in athletics. I pray for a hedge of protection around the coaches and their families.

I ask in the name of Jesus. Amen

First Corinthians 9:25-27 “Every athlete exercises self-control in all things. They do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable. So I do not run aimlessly; I do not box as one beating the air.  But I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified.”

Prayer for the Fans at Attending Our Games:

Proverbs 4:25 “Let your eyes look directly forward, and your gaze be straight before you.”

Father, today is game day. We are all excited and fired up. Sometimes with that excitement comes passion. Lord, I lift up our fans so that they will continue to be passionate but not lose sight of their appropriate behavior. I pray the fans celebrate our teams’ good plays as well as the plays of our opponents.

I pray all fans have a safe trip to and from the game. Let them show an honorable team spirit and while being a shining example to You. For those fans who are believers in Christ, I pray they lift our team and coaches up in prayer. In Your name I pray, Amen

Matthew 18:20 “For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.”

Prayer for the Athletic Team Players to Play as One:

1 Corinthians 1:10 “I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another in what you say and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly united in mind and thought.”

Dear Lord,

We ask for your blessings and guidance as our team takes the field today. Help us to put aside our personal agendas and come together as one cohesive unit, working towards a common goal. I pray all the players unite to lift each other up. Root out all jealousy that may try to creep into our team.

Grant us the wisdom to make good decisions, the courage to face challenges, and the determination to never give up. May we always play with integrity, sportsmanship, and respect for our opponents and each other.

We ask for your protection over all players on the field, and for a fair and injury-free game.

May the outcome reflect the best in all of us, and bring glory to your name.

Amen.

Philippians 2:3 “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves…”
