Prayers for Our Government

Prayer by George Washington:

I now make it my earnest prayer, that God would have you, and the state over which you preside, in His holy protection, that He would incline the hearts of the citizens to cultivate a spirit of subordination and obedience to government, to entertain a brotherly affection and love for one another, for their fellow citizens of the United States at large, and particularly for their brethren who have served in the field, and finally, that He would most graciously be pleased to dispose us all, to do justice, to love mercy, and to demean ourselves with that charity, humility, and pacific temper of mind, which were the characteristics of the Divine Author of our blessed religion, and without an humble imitation of whose example in these things, we can never hope to be a happy nation.

Prayer for Leaders to Have a Heart of Justice:

Romans 13:1 “Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God.”

O God, we humbly ask that you would guide and direct those who are in positions of leadership in our government. Give them a heart for justice and a desire to serve the common good.

Grant them wisdom to make just and fair decisions that benefit all people, and give them the courage to stand up for what is right, even in the face of opposition. Help them to be strong and courageous in the face of challenges, and to always seek your will in all they do. As they seek Your will, I pray they make decisions based on the will of the people. May they put aside their selfish ambitions and truly love our country and make decisions for the betterment of our country.

We pray that our government may be a beacon of hope and a model of good governance for the world. May it work to promote peace, justice, and the common good, and may it be a blessing to all who live within its borders.

We pray that you would bless our leaders with your presence and your guidance, and that you would use them to bring about positive change in our nation and around the world.

In your holy name we pray,

Amen.

1 Timothy 2:1-2 “I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people—  for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.”
