Prayer for Those Serving in the Military

Psalm 144:1 “Blessed be the Lord, my rock, who trains my hands for war, and my fingers for battle.”

Heavenly Father,

I never want to take our freedoms for granted. I come before You today to lift up the brave men and women serving in our military. Please place Your protective hand to be upon them as they stand in the gap for our freedom and safety.

“In the Lord, I take refuge” (Psalm 11:1). May this promise be a shield around all who serve, guarding them in every step and undergirding them with Your strength. Equip them, Lord, with courage and wisdom for each decision they face. Lord, as they face many fearful situations, flood them with courage with acts needed to serve as well as protect their lives. Remind them there is an army of prayer warriors surrounding them as they serve.

I pray for peace that surpasses understanding to guard their hearts and minds in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:7), especially in times of peril. May they find solace and strength in Your presence, knowing You are with them wherever they go (Joshua 1:9). Lord, your Word tells us the battle belongs to you. Many times we don’t understand all that is involved in war, but you do. Give our soldiers the confidence that they are serving in ways that truly protect our country.

Joshua 1:9 “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”

Train them, O Lord, not only in the skills of warfare but also in the wisdom to seek peace. May they be instruments of justice and protectors of the innocent. As the men and women serve, let them never lose sight of their fight for the peace and safety of their country. Father, I pray that our country values and appreciates the sacrifices these soldiers and their families make while serving. Remind the citizens of the free world that blood has been shed for the very freedoms we have today.

I also pray for their families, who carry the burden of their military absence. Provide them with comfort, strength, and peace, reminding them of Your faithfulness. “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit” (Psalm 34:18). Be especially close to those who wait, worry, and pray at home. Provide for their needs; send community and church workers who will minister to these families as their loved ones are deployed.

For those who return with scars, both seen and unseen, we ask for healing and provision. Guide them to the support they need, and help us to be Your hands and feet to them. Let us never forget the sacrifices they made while serving. I pray for services that are professionally trained to treat and serve the men and women who return after their time in the military. Let us all be sensitive to the needs of these brave soldiers.

Finally, I pray for a world where peace reigns, where swords are beaten into plowshares, and where Your love guides the hearts of all nations. Until that day, protect our servicemen and women, give them wisdom, and bring them home safely to reunite with their friends and families.

We ask all these things in the name of Jesus, our Lord and Savior, Amen.

Isaiah 41:10 “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”
